Junior Primary School

This project started in 2016, included 5 phases, 5 contractors and took 7 years to complete. The phasing was developed around available budget, priorities and the need for the school to operate safely during construction. This junior school, Grade R to Grade 3, has grown to over 500 learners and is constrained by it’s land size. The playground had become compacted sand, and shade during the summer months was a priority.

The first phase included edging the playground with seating, to enable a new synthetic turf to be installed. An oversized awning structure was installed on the mid level for shade, and for outdoor activities on rainy days.

The school hall had become too small to accommodate all learners, and was extended, and the tuck shop relocated. An additional classroom was added to replace the ‘temporary’ asbestos clad building that was probably erected over 50 years before. New fully accessible and gender neutral ablutions were included in the renovation to provide for parents and visitors, and a ramp allows for access to the upper level.

Early consultation with the teachers, and continuous involvement of a teacher representative ensured every decision was carefully considered to provide for a functional and cost effective end product.
