Durban Cultural Precinct Place Making Strategy
Promoting Plan 6 of the eThekwini Municipality IDP, namely A VIBRANT AND CREATIVE CITY – THE FOUNDATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY AND SOCIAL COHESION.
The vision set out aligns with eThekwini’s goals with the Sustainable Development Goal’s, and the more focused Local Area Plan. The World Organisation of United Cities and Local Governments proposes community involvement as the key to sustainable development, with culture as a core component of local identity. This translates to a fully inclusive strategy.
The investigation considered opportunities and threats in the area, defined by the brief, based on focused and online stakeholder questionnaires. Cultural Precincts are cross cutting, and, in order to make progress with the Action Plan, all eThekwini Departments were included.
The Action Plan overview indicates which department/ organization might take the lead on the proposed projects. The next phase includes meeting with each of these departments/ organisations to outline the purpose of this strategy, the benefits, and the potential for these to support a vibrant, creative city while achieving social cohesion for both the citizens of Durban and eThekwini Municipality.
