Ad Coelum
‘To Heaven’
The new heart of the home revolves around a central volume raised over an open plan living room. More akin to a gallery, this high volume is bound on three sides by clerestories, equally designed to bring natural light to the art as reconnect the interior with the heavens. The pavilion acts as an intermediary space which delicately merges internal and external volumes, lifting even higher to celebrate the reconnection with the sun. Warm winter light can now penetrate while movable shutters allow summer shading and added security from vervet monkeys, while permitting natural breezes to permeate through the house.
Bedsides the guest bedrooms, the new house, garage and entertainment pavilion is now completely accessible to someone in a wheelchair. To make the formal garden more resilient, the old pool was subsequently repurposed as a subterranean reservoir to collect stormwater as a more sustainable source of irrigation.
